Prince Nymphs according to Google were created in the 1930's which means they are quite an old pattern. This being said they still are effective and popular, withstanding the test of time. In fact, they very well just might be the best attractor general purpose nymph. They seem to work in most places Ive fished, and are flashy so therefore can catch the fishes eye from afar. They work great as an attractor lead fly, then dropping something more natural off the back. These dont seem to represent any specific aquatic bug, but does have a little bit of features from all the main aquatic bugs. The body is fat like a caddis, the split tail looks stonefly ish.. it can represent a mayfly as well, just overall looks like a general "bug" rather than anything specific.
I like that they can be tied in a wide range of sizes as well. Ive tied really large ones, even up to size 10, and super small (which can be rather difficult) down to size 20. I wouldn't tie much smaller than 20 though as it can get a bit difficult after that. You can use different color biots as well if you want, however the version I tied today is the original. Add a hot spot or not, it's up to you. I would however make sure you cement those biots in as ive had them pull out before without using that Solarez Resin on it.
Make sure you check out my sponsor Risen Fly. They have amazing deals on hooks and beads, but also sell some of the best fly rods Ive ever used, and at a price that is very reasonable. With the cost of fly fishing going up every year, it's refreshing to find great quality gear at prices we can all afford. Best off they are offering all of you a discount just for being my subscriber. So go to www.risenfly.com and type in McFly at checkout for 15% off your first order with them.
Also dont forget to pick up one of my fly boxes. I have both magnetic backed and silicone backed, if these sell well I plan on getting more styles as well and maybe even bringing back the shirts that everyone loved years ago. Check out my amazon store front to pick up the boxes. - www.amazon.com/shops/McFlyAngler
